Welcome to BuildingEnergy09
From the Conference Chair

As Conference Chair, I urge you to attend the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's (NESEA) 34th annual Building Energy Conference and Trade Show in Boston, March 10-12, 2009. Whether this is your first Building Energy conference or you've been attending NESEA conferences across the Northeast since the 1970s, you'll learn from the masters of our field about how to improve your life and business practices for greater sustainability. You'll also have a great time here. You'll see everyone from the old-timers who have been doing this for decades, to the new crop of practitioners who will give you faith that the next generation may help to re-inherit this earth.
This year, a spectacular committee put together the best professionals in the field from across the Northeast. Our rich content in sessions and workshops will explain everything from nuts and bolts logic to cutting-edge advances in the building and renewable energy industry. You and your colleagues, be they architects, engineers, government officials, facility managers, planners, real estate professionals, financial mavens, building scientists, students, or just plain folk have more to learn, and BuildingEnergy09 has a lot to offer. No other conference can give you the diverse blast of experiences over three days that NESEA provides to its participants.
BuildingEnergy09 will show you the best sustainable buildings and the real stories behind the design, construction, and post-occupancy results. BuildingEnergy09 will teach you how to integrate good buildings and renewables and will bring you up-to-the-minute information on new solar and wind installations. This year, the committee collaborated to demonstrate:
- Challenges unique to the Northeast (not California, Europe or other worthy global communities). We will highlight the brightest stars of our geographic climate and offer cutting-edge solutions.
- The nuts and bolts with a reminder of simple steps that have profound impact, such as the practice of collaboration and the cheap stuff that works.
- Our building stock of today will be 95% of what is standing in 40 years, and it needs help in rehab and retrofit.
- We all need to learn more to help save our damaged environment.
Please support BuildingEnergy09, NESEA, and the devoted practitioners who put together this conference that highlights the tools, actions, and solutions in the practice of sustainability.

A Message from Our Title Sponsor
Across the Northeast, individuals, government and business are promoting the use of renewable energy and green buildings. Whether they are motivated by environmental issues or high energy costs, supporters have become increasingly vocal and bold in promoting policies to advance renewables and energy efficiency. In such a favorable environment, it is important that we work together, learn from each other, and act vigorously to expand the market penetration of green buildings and renewable energy technologies.
BuildingEnergy 2009 is a perfect setting for energy and building professionals, as well as concerned citizens, to learn and network. I don’t know of a better place to make connections—both intellectual and personal. That’s why the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) is pleased to be the Title Sponsor of this conference.
MTC is the state’s development agency for renewable energy and the innovation economy. It administers the Renewable Energy Trust, which was created by the Legislature in 1997 as part of electric utility restructuring in order to promote renewable energy.
